Key features and functionality
- Flexible Printing Plates: These machines use flexible printing plates, originally made from rubber but now commonly photopolymer materials, with a relief image that transfers ink to the substrate.
- Ink Transfer: An anilox roller transfers a controlled amount of ink to the raised image areas of the printing plate, and a doctor blade removes excess ink.
- Substrate Feed: The substrate (the material being printed on) is fed from an unwind unit in a continuous roll (web-fed) and passes between the printing plate and a central impression cylinder (in CI presses) or individual impression cylinders (in stack-type presses).
- High-Speed Printing: The cylinders rotate at high speeds, transferring the image onto the substrate with each revolution.
- Drying System: A drying system, often involving hot air or UV lamps, ensures the ink dries quickly to prevent smudging.
